Sometimes the best books you can read on a subject, are not technically about the subject. Everyday I try to read something to inspire me to forgo standing in my own way. It’s a great day when the right quote or message can make you laugh at how melodramatic this all seems. Having the body you want is rarely as simple as “eat less, move more.” Let’s be honest, it is never that simple.
These are some of my favorite books that make me feel stupid, in the best of ways.

My personal favorite. I have read most of Thoreau’s work, but this book has more cracks, stains, and love than any of them.
Quote: Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
Quote: I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.
Quote: It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.
This is a book I have only recently read, but has inspired a ton of writing and research on motivation. While it is geared towards business, look past it and see what it can tell you in regards to how you look at motivation in general.
Nisargadatta has a method of saying something that makes you become friends with a self induced face palm.
Quote: Nothing can trouble you but your own imagination.
Quote: Leave it all behind you. Forget it. Go forth, unburdened with ideas and beliefs. Abandon all verbal structures, all relative truth, all tangible objectives.
Passage From The Tao of Pooh:
“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”
“What’s for breakfast? said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”
“I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully.
“It’s the same thing,” he said.
I am a firm believer that the happiness you possess in your job, reflects the way you carry yourself. I think people box the work of Tim Ferris based on the book title. Look past the four hours, and look into all of these things which can apply in someway towards what you do. Lastly, when polled people would rather have a personal assistant, than a personal trainer.
I go back and forth on what my favorite Gladwell work is. Right now, this one is winning. If you need an introduction to Gladwell, I encourage you to ask yourself – What do you know about pasta sauce?
At first sight, this book might seem to speak only economists or business moguls. I believe it’s heart lies in existentialism.
Quote on how “nudging” can make a difference: Well, to name just a few: better investments for everyone, more savings for retirement, less obesity, more charitable giving, a cleaner planet, and an improved educational system. We could easily make people both wealthier and healthier by devising friendlier choice environments, or architectures.
If there can be such a thing as a favorite audiobook author, it would be Seth Godin. I have only ever “read” one of his books and I plan to keep it that way as long as it is an option. Godin is the king of marketing, but does so by harnessing a deep insight into the human condition and story telling.
Quote: The most common response to the Dip is to play it safe. To do ordinary work, blameless work, work that’s beyond reproach. When faced with the Dip, most people suck it up and try to average their way to success.
You don’t have to subscribe to any religion in order to find greatness of this book.
Quote: The more honest you are, the more open, the less fear you will have, because there’s no anxiety about being exposed or revealed to others. So, I think that the more honest you are, the more self-confident you will be.
Quote: Knowledge has to acquire urgency before it leads to action.

Great selections! I didn’t know Gladwell was on TED, going to watch that now.
It’s one of my favorites.
OOH I love these types of posts. A quote for the beautiful Leigh.
“True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not the enrichment of the leaders.” -Townsend, Robert
Nice.
Awesome list, thanks Leigh! I simply love The Art of Happiness and must revisit it soon, and will definitely check out some of the others as well. And yes, simply put, Thoreau rocks.
I find no matter how bad the day, if you just pick those two up and read not 5 sentences, you feel better.
I needed this today…
“Nothing can trouble you but your own imagination.”
Mine is a thing of beauty sometimes.
Leigh I am curious what your thoughts are on the therapy Tom Venuto talks about? N something? Do you think things like hypnosis and mind manipulation techniques can help with fat loss?
What you are thinking about I think is NPL (Neuro-linguistic programming). It is a form of cognitive therapy, which I will be discussing a lot more on soon. The short answer is I think anything that helps you understand yourself better have an effect on your fat loss. It can be both positive and negative, but that is a different conversation all together.
Ooh, can’t wait to hear what you have to say about NLP…

Leigh have you read the updated edition of 4-hour work week? Is it worth buying it all over again? Also I have doubts about the credibility o Tim due to his recent weight loss book efforts and supplemental ties. Thoughts?
I haven’t read it, so I have no comment on that. As to the weight loss stuff, I have no idea what you are talking about but I would hope it is personal based. Somethings you just shouldn’t outsource. Still, I should comment unless I know more.
Just put a few of these on request at my library. Thanks Leigh.
Welcome
So timely!
I’m seriously considering starting a business and have never been self employed. These books sound perfect for ALL of the things I’m working to accomplish right now.
Ah the land of self-employed. There are some excellent podcast online for that kind of thing. I highly recommend Internet Business Mastery. It really isn’t isolated to internet business at all. Very respectable guys, good ethics.
I’ve read everything Gladwell has written! Not sure I could pick a favorite—it’d be between Outliers and The Tipping Point!
I know it’s a tough call isn’t it?
I echo Karen’s sentiments, I really needed this today! Today Leigh, you are the angel on my shoulder
Much better than the alternative.
As a lit major, I love that you love Thoreau. He is right up there with Emerson as far as my favorites go. <3
I always tell people to put that book next to whatever religious script or bible they claim for themselves, it makes a great addition. I am a very future oriented person, but what I wouldn’t give for a night to spend with Emerson and Thoreau.
I love all the works you’ve posted, but above all, thank you for listing the Tao of Pooh. Somewhere along my many moves since college, I’ve lost my Tao of Pooh and Te of Piglet. And, reflecting on that, I realize that I have lost a little bit of that child-like wonder and curiosity that made life simple, fun and spontaneous…filled with the belief that I can do whatever it is I need to do without hesitations, doubt, or worry.
“Do you really want to be happy? You can begin by being appreciative of who you are and what you’ve got.”
“There are things about ourselves that we need to get rid of; there are things we need to change. But at the same time, we do not need to be too desperate, too ruthless, too combative. Along the way to usefulness and happiness, many of those things will change themselves, and the others can be worked on as we go. The first thing we need to do is recognize and trust our own Inner Nature, and not lose sight of it.”
” Not like Pooh, the most effortless Bear we’ve ever seen.”
“Just How do you do it, Pooh?”
“Do What?” asked Pooh.
“Become so Effortless.”
“I don’t do much of anything,” he said.
“But all those things of yours get done.”
“They just sort of happen,” he said
Thanks for the reminder…I’ve needed those recently.
Agree with your take on the 4-hour work-week book; “Look past the four hours”. There’s some exercises there that sound so simple yet, with all my gym workouts, I need to muster up some guts to do them. You know like the one about lying flat on the floor as you walk into starbucks. Great mental tricks I’d say ‘-)
Mark Martinez,
Testing out hyper gain like the energizer bunny
Very nice suggestions to read. I have only listened to outliers as an audio book. But this list looks amazing. Will definitely get some of these.
