The first coffee shop I frequented was called Cup of Joe. It was everything you expected from a local coffee shop. It housed worn out furniture, oversized cups and a constantly occupied chess board. The smell was a mixture of cigarettes, coffee and patchouli that drifted in from the goth kids. At the time, there were no Starbucks. Coffee drinking as a sport was generally taken in by the underground. I had no inkling years later how much it would change.
Now when I sit in a coffee shop, even the local artistic ones, it is different. Smoke is nowhere to be found. The furniture is fluffed and clean. Still there is a rustic and creative vibe you can’t escape when you are inside, even in the Starbucks on every corner. It feels as if when people enter the coffee shop they are entering a part of themselves they hope to see become a reality. At times it is the reality.
David Bach is the author of the Automatic Millionaire. In it he discusses the “latte factor.” In a straightforward way, he shows how buying coffee daily can lead to a loss of millions. It undoubtedly is a lot like fat loss isn’t it? Small diet decisions every day leading to your deficit or surplus of fat income. While I sit, write and drink my fortune unsaved in a cup, I can’t help but be inspired by what surrounds me. So one day, I made a playlist to caputre the feeling and took it to the gym. A vibe which would help me build debt to my fat margin.
The music in this playlist is real specific. It is mellow by nature. It is not sad, but perhaps a touch of bittersweet. For myself, it is a little more Angela Chase than Tom Waits and Iggy Pop. I will save them for my 70′s collection.

Nice mix Leigh! Love it.
Thanks Robin
Thanks for the book, now my table is ready
Is this a library or bar?
Between the covers I thought you were ready
A half-angel, half-tart
Now I am going to be na na na’ing all day–thanks for reminding me of this one!
That intro makes happiness in the world.
Leigh this is the best list yet. I forgot all about Suzanne Vega – Tom’s Diner, I used to listen to that song all the time. Now I need to update my ipod and get some coffee.
Vega is Mega
This list is freaking awesome. I never would think to train to stuff like this but I put some of things songs and other on my playlist today and it was really cool. Almost movie like or something. I recommend training to echo and the bunnyman!
I once did a cooldown to the Killing Moon, does that count?
Love the Screaming Trees, Mark Lanegan has an awesome voice. I also see Paul Westerburg….you had the soundtrack to the movie “Singles” didn’t you?
Touch me I’m Dick.
Own the movie, soundtrack and most of the flannel still.
Love it!
You should make this an iMix on iTunes.
I adore Damien Rice, but I always get weepy listening to his music. He’s so freaking passionate I can’t help but be completely moved.
And, though he is a pint-sized man, he is so damn sexy. God bless the Irish.
Great list………what is it about bittersweet? Perhaps it’s the best representation of actual life.
My “bittersweet playlist”:
“Start Again”-Spooky Ghost
“Under The Milky Way”-The Church
“Crucify”-Tori Amos
“Hey Jack Karouac”-10,000 Maniacs
“Tear Drop”-Massive Attack (them from “House”)
“No New Tale to Tell”-Love and Rockets
etc.
Great tunes! I agree that I would never train to those tunes, but reading listening to them with a great cup of black coffee would be great!
Rock on
