Extra note: There was a slight error in a figure I gave regarding muscle mass. I stated roughly 1000-1200 kcal for muscle but it is more likely to be 800-1000kcal.

What the Dog Saw = YESSSSS, I love Malcolm Gladwell’s books. I am currently reading The Tipping Point and am making my way thru them all. Great gift idea.
Thank you for answering my question about dating.
I think I have always looked at it like everything is going to happen once I have lost the weight. Without looking at other things like character, social awkardness and low self esteem. Losing weight seems to be easier than working on those other things, since I have already done it. I have also heard this kind advice from men, but it’s good to hear it from an attractive woman.
I just needed to tell you that your description of the hillbilly down the street made me laugh out loud. Thanks Leigh
Leigh,
With those estimates for muscle gain per month, are you speaking specifically about contractile proteins as opposed to the weight from glycogen and water in muscle? Or do those numbers include all of that?
And as far as how many calories are “held” in a pound of muscle, is that specifically related to contractile proteins, glycogen, and any intramuscular triglycerides for the most part?
“With those estimates for muscle gain per month, are you speaking specifically about contractile proteins as opposed to the weight from glycogen and water in muscle? Or do those numbers include all of that?”
Yeah it doesn’t include glycogen/water weight. Here is the article (s) I am talking about where I discuss it.

For the most part I am pulling the figures from various research, the biggest coming stuff by William Melvins work and IRC write ups in Modern Nutrition research. Regardless muscle is our muscle tissue consists of approx 70% water, 22% protein, 7% fat, and the rest is in minerals (salts potassium). So the small amount of protein can vary (and this is where I have seen things slightly differ) from 800-1000kcal. I beleive williams states specifically 700-800. I have seen other writers claim as high as 1000. Split the difference?
For growing of tissues it is roughly 5/8 caloires needed for 1 gram. So if it takes 454 grams to equal a pound of muscle growth you would need roughly 2270-3632 calories in excess caloric intake for a pound of muscle. However, rate of growth doesn’t equal rate of excess. So simply eating 500 calories over every day doesn’t mean a rate of a pound of muscle a week. This is going to be dependent on partioning, experiance, drugs, etc.
These keep getting better and better Leigh. I want a full report of you jumping out at the hillbilly.
Just for the record, Jillian Michael’s Wii game has been panned big time. Basically the consensus is that some crap company created a fitness game and she just slapped her name on it. There are a sea of negative reviews on it. I would recommend sticking with the Wii Fit Plus game (Rhythm Kung Fu is awesome!) and Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout which is an all boxing workout. Both are a lot of fun.
So there you go. Two game recommendations that are better than Jillian. Don’t take my word for it…check the Interwebs
I just love that you use the word ‘hinky”!!!
Is there a particular type of glove you use to walk in during winter? Like some that are also wind resistant? My hands get so cold that it makes the nerves all up my arm and into my neck hurt! Plus, my fingers go numb when they get really cold. Just curious if there were some really good gloves that didn’t let the chill in! I love walking on sunny cold days, but windy, wet and cold? No thanks!
Missy, have you looked at ski/snowboarding gloves? They’re usually designed to keep you nice and dry. Otherwise, if ya don’t mind lookin kinda hokey, get some food service/medical latex or nitrile gloves and wear them over your other ones. They’ll keep the wet out and the heat in.
I’m kind of disappointed about the no new BBE/FLTS challenge after the holidays until Feb or March, but I guess I’ll have to keep the momentum going on my own for a while!
