Milk: Good or Bad?
This was discussed this week on the site GymJunkies. A question on milk use was asked to a lot of trainers and writers. You can probably guess my stance. I wasn’t surprised to see a lot of the common false information about milk discussed. Regardless, it makes for a interesting read. Check it out here.
Gluten Sanity?
Erin Elberson runs one of the few Gluten-Free lifestyle blogs I believe is worth a read. I don’t mean it to sounds harsh but most blogs that specialize on one dietary lifestyle show extreme bias. They end up leading you into a one sided view tour you can’t end. It is way worse than Gilligan’s Island. Erin is good at seeing the middle ground and is a good information source for Gluten issues.
Check out a recent blogpost Erin did on the gluten conundrum.
Still getting scared by HFCS?
Alan Aragon has done a fantastic review on Fructose. The post stirred quite a bit of talk (myself included) in the comments. Read the post and comments for a wealth of knowledge on the topic. Check it out here.

Hi Leigh!
Yup – a real doozie of a discussion is brewing over at AA’s blog (I don’t think I’ve recovered yet from your TMNT reference – but I digress)…
Milk – fascinating collection of opinions. It seems that many people advocate for raw milk and are against pasturization. I’ve been trying to find some literature to either support or oppose the position but I’ve come up empty.
Obviously if you go raw you need to be trustful of the hygeine practices of the farmers/farm, but are the benefits of raw milk all they’re cracked up to be in your opinion/based on what you’ve read? I’ve never bought into the food enzyme theory, and I realize that pasturization does degrade nutrient content to some degree (but by how much and which nutrients? and will this matter in the greater scheme of health?) Does is matter how it is pasturized?
Have you seen any RTC’s on raw vs. dead milk? Most of the data seems to be observational and correlative.
Oh and I know people mean well, but please don’t send me a link to the Weston Price Foundation – I’m aware of them but I don’t really trust them for factual and unbiased information.
Another question I have (and this was a decidedly partisan issue on that site) is the concept of allergy/intolerance. I’m having a heck of a time trying to get good data on what approximate percentage of people have allergies or intolerances to milk/lactose. Seems many people think that most people can’t handle milk – or at least pasturized milk.
Sorry – a lot of questions in there. Only respond if you have time, Leigh!
Raw vs pasteurized is more of a theory argument because there really isn’t any research to back either vs another. In short, it is at a too soon to tell phase but what I can tell you is you have to be careful with raw milk and make sure your supplier is a good one. What is funny is you can’t find illness by pesticides as you via raw milk. Just had to throw that in there.
As for nutrient loss it can be deemed as extremely minimal.

As you can see the only real changes are in things that milk isn’t strong in anyway.
Thanks Leigh!
Glad to not be the 3 hour tour guide
Home made trail mix is definitely the way to go. You end up picking thru the premade ones anyhow eating the stuff you like.
My favorites:
-pumkpin seeds
-almonds
-dried cherries
-cacao nibs or mini chocolate chips
Heaven in a bag.
That video is hysterical!!! I’m uncovering some supressed memories from my high impact aerobic teaching days – doing can can kicks in neon thongs – that kind of thing. Where on earth did you dig that up?
I am going out to make trail mix today. I’ll let you know what I come up with! Maybe you should have a contest for the best mix!
That was a fun read over at Alan’s blog. Agree with mike on gthe TMNT reference. A+ Leigh.
On the milk topic, what enzyme would you take to drink milk?

This is what they use in milks like lactaid. You could just take it yourself and see how it goes.
Sending healing vibes to your poor guitars! Great post, thanks.
Thank you, I still haven’t got word yet
RE Milk: Lactose-intolerant people can either add lactase to their milk before drinking, or buy lactose-free milk or the US equivalent if available.
They can also try goat milk – no lactose and I think it tastes way better than cow’s milk.
Man, I wish those guys had been at the Devo concert I went to a few months ago. It was advertised as a concert where they were going to play Freedom of Choice in its entirety. Well, they did. And that’s all they played. The concert was about 45 minutes long and the tickets were $50. After 10 minutes of clapping, we left, figuring they were not going to do an encore. 20 minutes after the show ended, they came out and did one more song. Next time I’ll get a massage for the same $ per minute.
All I can say is if the Bad Boys were awesome back then, check this out:

Thanks for your input on the milk post Leigh!
It has definitely caused quite the controversy on a few forums and blogs… I’m getting the feeling Milk will always be a very controversial topic no matter how much information is out there!

Make a snowdog named Gromit for Wallace.
I think the word you were looking for to describe the aerobic competitive boys was “Fabu-lous!” What a hoot…made me want to get up and join them!
I used to enjoy reading Jason Ferruggia’s blog, but recently I have become annoyed by his total lack of common sense on nutrition.
Glad you shared re: trail mix. I haven’t done that in years and I forgot how good (and healthy) you can make it. Thanks!
I have been on a trail mix kick myself lately. Sesame Sticks FTW.
