James cook is a bit of a hard ass. I wont lie that we butt heads sometimes but his intent is well meaning.  James has written a few articles on the web that got notice to say the least. Let’s just say I am glad to be on his good side heh.

James wrote a review for Body By Eats and asked if it was cool if he posted it online in his new blog. He hasn’t got his new blog up yet so he asked if I would mind posting it up here. When I received it I wasn’t sure what I was going to get of if I would like the review. I would have posted it anyway, but I think it does a good job at describing and giving a sneak peek to the book.  When James gets his blog up I will point there.

James Cooks Review of Body By Eats

Junk. Trash. Garbage.  These are not adjectives to describe food. These are adjectives to describe the state of the diet and fitness industry.  This industry is filled with the wrong kinds of people and information. Every so often a person will enter the industry and make a positive mark showing a true passion at trying to reach for change.

I received a copy of Leigh Peele’s “Body By Eats” a few weeks ago. If not aware Leigh Peele is a writer and trainer out of North Carolina and brings a refreshing look at health and fitness to the table. Leigh is not shy to say what she feels or lazy to investigate the real issues at hand in the industry. After I received the book I read through it pretty swiftly. It was not what I was expecting having been around for a while to see Leigh’s original preview to Body by Eats. Initially it seemed only a recipe book would be released. This is way more than that.

Body By Eats starts off with an interesting look at food from the past. It is not overly specific and basically gives a cliffs note of past standards but it presents an interesting view of farming that I had not once thought. The writing is also amazing and by far superior to any work that Leigh has released to date. She obviously used a professional editor this time compared to the repeat problems that were apparent in Fat Loss Troubleshoot.

Quickly, Leigh dives into research and in my favorite part of the book takes you step-by-step through a research study. The first few chapters force you to take a look at why we believe and how valid the claims are we are making about health and nutrition.  She makes compelling arguments for/against organics, grass feed cattle, and vegetarianism. The whole book takes a very balanced and objective approach to discussing these subjects.

The later chapters focus on activity and its relation to the life we live and food we eat. There is a very funny and interesting study Leigh performed to create a Paleo lifestyle and an eye opening account at how stagnant we are in our daily lives.

There is also a How-To section that discusses the formula for eating depending on your goals. Leigh added a  formula for determining your daily essential nutrients relative to macros. I also enjoyed her stats on muscle gaining which included a formula for women.

Leigh’s mantra is without a doubt to embrace food and to denounce the dogma of the fitness and nutrition industry but she manages to do it with class and without making you feel stupid if you happened to believe in these things.

At the end of the book the bonus manuals present you with a very detailed and unique collection of recipes. With catchy names and easy to follow instructions, I really liked what I read. I have only tried one so far but it came out as instructed. She also included weight and cup measurement which I appreciate being someone who utilizes the digital scale for my eating needs while on cuts.

The main recipe book is an assortment of short and long recipes that tie in with the theme of activity in the book. There are 3 additional recipe books – Bulking, Veggie/Vegan, and Desserts. Each has 30 recipes in them and give you a variety of items to choose from and caloric amounts.

It’s hard to imagine anyone not being pleased by this product. If that wasn’t enough the membership site (what I have seen) is leagues ahead of others.  I am pleased about the v-bulletin forum the most.  I am not a fan of gateway membership site forums you often see from gurus.

Since the product is not out yet I am not aware of the price of this product. The costs of these books in a bookstore could go for 60-80 dollars. I am told there is an audiobook too and that would up the value. If Leigh charges less than 100 dollars for the material I think that would be fair priced.  I am not a fan of the pricing for a lot of products in the fitness industry and have been vocal about this. You can pay 97 dollars for  some products and not received half of the information or quality.

I am excited about this book getting into people’s hands. I spend a lot of time on message boards trying to help out the Bros and Newbs. These message boards are filled with people who believe things without asking why. I believe Leigh has provide a good method of learning how to do that for people in this book. It is very different from Fat Loss Troubleshoot but just as valuable in my opinion.
